There are still many doubts regarding Lettuce, whether in Countries like the United States it is part of the daily Rabbit's diet, in countries like Brazil it is considered fatal for the Rabbit, or as in Portugal, which still holds the idea that it does a lot of harm and only bad humans give it to their bunnies.

I will speak here on this topic and answer the most common questions I receive on this subject:

-Bunnies can eat lettuce? - Yes, bunnies can eat lettuce! Lettuce is a green like any other and rabbits can eat it, but lettuce is not often talked about because in terms of energy or nutrition it is very poor. Lettuce is very rich in water and for a bunny to get all the nutrients he needs from the lettuce he would have to eat a lot of lettuce and when eating a lot of lettuce, as they are very rich in water will cause the bunnies to end up with diarrhea  and Diarrhea is not good for rabbits (see here on bunny poop), so it is not very common in some countries to advise lettuce for rabbits to eat. But if you want  give a leaf or other, you can give it, no problem and we like it very much. But be aware that there is a type of Lettuce that the bunnies cannot really eat, which is the Iceberg Lettuce, that is fatal for the bunnies.

- Why do they say that Lettuce kills Bunnies? - There is a lettuce that is toxic to Bunnies, the Iceberg, that should never be given. But the truth is that because lettuce is very rich in water, if it´s given in excess it causes diarrhea in  rabbits and diarrhea is fatal for the rabbits. As many humans only gave lettuce to their bunnies every day and in large quantities they started to get sick and ended up dying, hence the idea that Lettuce kills the Bunnies started.

- Can Bunnies eat all the lettuces? - No, Bunnies can NOT eat the Iceberg lettuce, usually this lettuce is lighter and crispier. But they can eat all other varieties of lettuce without a problem, as long as not every day or in large quantities.

-So why do they say we can't eat Lettuce? - Lettuce is very rich in water and very poor in nutrients, it´s a green that will not feed the bunny and that if given in large quantities or every day will end up causing problems in the bunnies' tummy, such as diarrhea and diarrhea it´s fatal for bunnies, in addition as it is very poor in nutrients, it doens´t feed the bunny so  he doens´t get all the nutrients he needs and eventually gets sick. If you give lettuce every day it will end up doing the rabbit a lot of harm and can even lead to death, so it started to be said that Lettuce kills the Rabbits, but as I mentioned above, this is not in all countries , there are countries where bunnies eat various types of lettuce and are in very good health, it is very important to know how to give in moderation and as part of a healthy and balanced diet.
