Why do we eat our poop?

Actually the technical term is Cecotrophy, or the art of eating poo!

Yes, we eat our own poo, but we only eat the cecotrophs, which are very moist, dark poo that look like blackberries.

If everything goes well, you'll never see these poops, because they come straight out of our butt and into our mouth, you're thinking, aren't you? Yes, when we have our head tucked between our legs and then sit there chewing happily, that's right, we are eating our cecotrophs.

You'll never see them, because it's a sign that our diet is balanced, when we start leaving cecotrophs scattered around the house or when they get stuck to our fur it's because something is not right and usually it's because our diet is too rich in protein, too much pellets, vegetables or herbs and not enough hay, you need to reformulate the diet urgently, usually one or two days just hay and water solve it, then we need to cut down on the excess protein to keep everything well. If it is a health issue it is very important to go to the vet because something is not right, (it could be teeth, gas, pain, etc.).

But why do we eat our poo?

We eat because our body cannot process all the food we ingest at once, so in a first phase the food that comes in is processed and what is not completely digested by the system is transformed into a cecotroph, then it comes out again to be ingested and in the second phase it is already totally absorbed.

I'm going to leave here a very useful and funny infogram from the RSPCA that they have for you to look at.
