Calcium Stones
One thing that makes me very upset is the pet stores' insistence on getting you humans to buy Calcium stones for us.
Calcium stones suck!
Do Calcium Stones hurt Rabbits? - Yes. It is very important that the bunny has a balanced diet, since the beginning they know that we have to avoid certain foods due to the high calcium content (see here if you don't already remember), so it is not logical to walk without eating things as good as cabbages that have a lot of calcium and can harm us and we can gnaw calcium stones.
So how does the Bunny wear his teeth? - The front teeth we wear with sticks, cardboard and if you leave the furniture at home, everything but calcium stones. You can make fun toys or even pick tree branches like apple, pear, birch or even willow and give them to us to gnaw on, or pine cones, we also like pine cones, if you want to see here the toys that my father made for us.
At the store I was told it was important to buy the calcium stone. - One thing I already noticed, the stores do not perceive any of this. They just want to sell, they are only interested in making money, they don't want to know anything else. To this day, the only stores specializing in bunnies that I have seen and met are in the United States or the United Kingdom, stores that really want the good of bunnies, without looking at brands or just wanting money. In Portugal I know a few and I have a partnership with some (I have discount coupons), but first I went to see if they were really good.
Why can't the Bunnies eat the calcium stone? - Calcium stones are stones made of pure calcium, we are very delicate and if we ingest too much calcium we will end up with kidney and bladder problems, we can have kidney stones and sand, just like you. Since they have a bunny they know the importance of a balanced diet, we must be very careful with vegetables with a lot of calcium, with diets that have a lot of calcium and even with Alfalfa that we should not eat from 6 months because it has a lot of calcium and it can hurt us, they are always looking at our pee to see if we don't have excess calcium (do you still remember how you see it? See here ). Are we all taking care of calcium and then we'll be gnawing and licking a bit of pure calcium for days on end?
